2022.01.27 17:58 loljksure First major dent/scratch on my 2017 :(

First major dent/scratch on my 2017 :( I'm so mad at myself. I was backing into a space in a tight parking garage yesterday and sideswiped a concrete pillar. Thankfully I was able to buff out most of it and apply some touch up paint.
I'm getting an estimate at a body shop, but it's not until mid February. Any tips to fix at home or ideas for how much this would cost?

2022.01.27 17:58 Luckyskittles Why we shouldn't get upset over no new album this year

A new album would be nice, but here are some things that might hold us over while we wait

  1. TES (Expanded Edition) is probably going to release this year, since they've done it for two albums. Sure, most stuff is just instrumentals, but they do release some unreleased stuff
  2. TES merch would also be released for the 20th anniversary
  3. 8 Mile Soundtrack would also get an Expanded Edition, & some merch

2022.01.27 17:58 MormonMoron The Biden admin has so many problem that the southern border problems have fallen by the wayside. There have been some recent trends that are very concerning.

With Russia, COVID, inability to promote palatable legislation, swearing at reporters, falling polling numbers, and more, it seems that Biden has neglected the southern border again and it is again turning into a problem big enough to push news cycles. In particular, November and December have shown some serious and problematics trends.
FY21 already had nearly record illegal immigration, apprehensions, etc. Biden has got the number of unaccompanied minors in the custody of the federal government more under control. It peaked in April 21 at 22k and has slowly (and almost monotonically) decreased to around 9k. It was stuck at around 12k until October, so it is yet to be seen whether the drop is just lack of new numbers arriving because it isn't the season.
That isn't the bad part. The bad part is what has been happening in terms of the federal government releasing apprehensions into the US. Prior to November, Biden had been expelling the vast majority of apprehensions via Title 42 (which was the Biden era law that expelled them for COVID reasons), particularly single adults. However, in the midst of Delta trailing off and Omicron surging, Biden started to apply Title 42 to less than 50% of the apprehensions.
Here are some takeaways from the December report

The really big changes here are 1. We had been expelling more than 50% via Title 42. Prior to November, the expulsion of single adults via Title 42 was 75%+. This has dropped almost 20 percentage points, still in the midst of the pandemic. 2. The vast majority of the rest of the apprehension were processed under Title 8. This is where there are a lot of options about how it is handled. The problem is that starting in November, they started using "Notice To AppeaOwn Recognizance (NTA-OR)" and "Parole + ATD" far more frequently. Previously they had been using a mixture of those two and "Warrant of Arrest/Notice To Appear - (Detained)". 3. In fact, the vast majority of those that slipped through from Title 42 to Title 8 are now being process as "Notice To AppeaOwn Recognizance (NTA-OR)". That number doubled from 17k to 34k from October to November.
The real takeaway is that the changes in the last 2 months has resulted in approximately 55% of Title 8 apprehensions, which is 56% of all apprehensions, are being released into the US outright. This amounts to 30% of all people being apprehended at the border being simply released into the US populace. Of the other 30% of Title 8 apprehensions that are detained, about 50% of those end up being released into the US after their detention. This means that 55% + 15% of Title 8 apprehension eventually are released into the US, which amounts to about 40% of all border apprehension.
People want to claims we don't have open borders, but there is basically a 50/50 chance of getting into the US if you show up at the border, especially if you don't have a criminal background. These policies are unsustainable, especially as temperatures warm and the Biden-policy-induced surge begins again. As a closing caution, December 2022 has the highest December number of apprehensions in history and more than the three previous years combined. Those types of numbers, coupled with loosening strictness on who gets in, could be a harbinger for a catastrophe come this spring.

2022.01.27 17:58 PointPlank Mixing REST and WebSocket in the same API?

A bit of foreground is that I'm working on a full-stack web application built with a node backend and a Next frontend. I'm developing chat functionality hence I decided on WebSockets to be able to receive real-time updates from the server.
Now, while I'm developing my application, I realized I not only need an event-driven API that Web sockets is so great for. I also need a more "traditional" transactional request/response pattern. To be very specific I need the event-driven approach to inform clients about new messages, but I need to be able to request the server to post a new message in the chat. And I would like to be able to get acknowledgment from the server that the message has indeed been posted(or not). And this is just one example, but there is of course more.
Most examples online are very simple and only implement the necessary functionality to demo the capabilities of Websockets. And not how to handle the less obvious requirements that a real-world system might have. So I'm in doubt about how to design my system.

My current idea is to have the backend that has both WebSocket connections to the client and provides REST endpoints for any req/res actions. I believe this is valid, especially because I realize that this is how GraphQL(and therefore fx. messenger) works with API that utilizes Subscriptions for real-time events and has mutations/queries for req/res type actions.

BUT I'm not using GraphQL, so I don't find much information about this type of backend. So I'm in doubt if there are any major drawbacks to designing a backend like this. The alternative I see is of course to implement a req/res pattern on top of the WebSocket connection. But that would require some engineering, which I would be without if I just used the normal REST pattern I've worked with many times before.

TL;DR: I'm looking for advice on whether it makes sense to have both a WebSocket connection and REST API endpoints in the same backend for the same application. Because I need both capabilities from an event-driven API as well as a "traditional" request/response-based API.
